Nectarine Health was founded with the goal of using artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide accurate monitoring for assisted senior living and independent living facilities. The aim: to provide real-time monitoring to alert carers of both acute events (such as falls) and also monitor long-term behavioural changes to enable care-givers to provide better care. We were commissioned to develop the industrial design language and provide mechanical and production engineering support.
The system works by pairing ultra-lightweight user-worn hardware with complex cloud-based AI and machine learning. In collaboration with the electronics engineers at Nectarine, Goodwin Hartshorn developed the wristband, the communications node and the nurses’ clip to allow Nectarine to extract data in a respectful and unobtrusive way.
Developed with input from the care-community, AI/machine learning is used within the system so that it gradually learns and improves based on collected data. The result is that it provides increasingly accurate monitoring.
Ultimately, whether at home or within a care environment, the aim for both our design work and Nectarine's impressive software has been to provide greater peace of mind and greater independence as we age.
