After we designed the original Garlic Rocker, Joseph Joseph asked us to develop a more conventional type of garlic press. The result is the Clean-Press – a garlic crusher that separates in two. This means it’s exceptionally easy to use and clean. The garlic can be crushed without peeling the skin. The top section can be used to scrape the crushed garlic into the pan and then to remove the skin. With conical holes in the crushing plate, it’s also easy to rinse.
Even though the product is deceptively simple, we went through dozens of prototypes and drawings to develop the mechanism and refine the form. The eureka moment was realising that separating the two handles allowed us to build in a range of features that make the press much easier to clean.
