Project: Opening Up

Client: Waitrose

Date: 2002

Food packaging can be extremely difficult to open. For older and disabled users, problems with opening packaging are amplified. Understanding this, Waitrose commissioned this research project to explore how packaging can be made easier to open for older people—and consequently everyone. Detailed user research identified the muscular, visual and cognitive problems with opening packaging. The images show improvements to ring-pull cans, bacon packaging and jam jars. They represent three of over thirty proposed improvements.
